First step to a new direction

Hi folks :)

I had a lovely time yesterday at the last ever Port Fairy MADE Artist Market.

I come home with some lovely things too!

The middle small dark one is now mine – I love it so much thanks foxowlroad!

The cream on on the left is now mine – it has gorgeous pale green large scale gingham on the inside and its reversible too! By Pattern & Print

I used the market to have a bit of a clearance of my ready made pincushions, and boy did they get a clear out!  Thanks so much to everyone who came along to shop.  It was really lovely to meet some of you too!.

I do still have some pincushions left over and I have started listing them at heavily reduced prices in my Etsy shop.

Reduced from $30 to $15

So there you go, things are happening. :)

It’s Market Time!

Hi folks

Just a quick post to let you know I’ll be at the Port Fairy MADE Artist Market this Saturday 8th December 2012.

It should be a lot of fun if last year’s Christmas market is anything to go by. It’s a wonderful opportunity to gift homemade this Christmas. So many unique and delightful things to be found!

This year, stall holders have been asked to make a Christmas decoration to add to a Christmas tree.  The tree will be raffled and the money raised will go to Friends Of Griffiths Island to assist with conservation efforts currently happening on the Island.  Griffiths Island is a small island off the coast of Port Fairy that is home to a lighthouse and Short Tailed Shearwaters.

Here is my decoration – it also doubles as a pincushion surprisingly ;)

Pincushion? Yes - but also a Christmas decoration

I can’t wait!  Make sure you come and say hello if you drop by.

Where do you get it?

I’ve added a new page today to make it easy to find where to buy my pincushions.  It just up the top there, next to the Pincushions page.

More recently, I have made the change to made to order for some of my designs.  There will always be one off, ready to go pincushions available, but some will now be made as orders are made.  This will only add a day or two to the order.

To whet your appetite, here is my newest made to order design – the rainbow.  Rainbows are so eye-catching and bright, and a natural occurance.  What better way to decorate than with all the colours of the rainbow?  I stitch this free hand, no patterns or lines, just me, a bunch of bright coloured embroidery thread & a needle.  Happy-making :)

Who says I have to?

You know, its hard to listen to yourself sometimes.  Sometimes, even though I have misgivings, I do something that has been suggested by someone else or I am influenced by others into doing something that is not a direction I would normally go.

One such adventure was my foray into the world of kits.  So many people told me I should make my pincushions as kits so others could make them.

Don’t get me wrong, I am proud of them to a certain extent.  I worked for many hours on each one.  I made sure the patterns all worked.  I had them tested by others.  I wrote & re-wrote the instructions many times over.  I took photo after photo and edited soooo many pics.  I spent countless hours on them really.  Sure, I got excited about the newness of the idea & what I could do with it, but here’s the kicker – I never really ENJOYED one moment of the process.

I forgot that I make pincushions.  Its what I do and I love it.  The preparation is not the fun bit for me.  The fun bit is making each one with love and care.  The fun bit is using my hands to create something fun, colourful and hopefully wonderful for those who get one – whether that is via a gift or purchase.

So I have thought long and hard and I have decided not to make kits anymore.  I have a few in stock that I are available at a reduced price in my Etsy storeMadeit store and Facebook store, but once they are gone, that’s it – no more kits.

This means I can concentrate more on what I love to do – make pincushions!  Back to my happy place again.

Have you been influenced like me into doing something that didn’t fit who you are & what you do?

P.S. – only 1 red penguin kit left – either via my facebook store by clicking the pic above or here in my etsy store

It’s all in the preparation

Today, I thought you may like to see what goes on to make my pincushions.

Every now & then, I sit down to my big kitchen table with my pile of felt and go nuts preparing pincushions for sewing.

felt pile

I have my popular designs that I make reglarly, but I also always have ideas kicking around I need to try too.  Today was a day for both types of preparation.  I am out of peacocks (my biggest seller), I have a creative challenge to meet for an etsy team I belong to, and I want to upsize a couple of mini pincushions I’ve made recently.  This is the extent of my written plans for this session.  Not much eh? LOL  A slack prep day today!

And so on to cutting!

I cut my felt a few different ways.  I do die cut a couple of things – like my big circles, and use the rotary cutter for the sides, but most other things are cut with good old scissors freehand, making it up as I go.

If a design turns out to be popular, I will sometimes make a pattern to make it a little less fiddly and time consuming when it comes to preparation.

Once all the cutting is done, its on to embroidery thread selection and then the prep is all done.  8 pincushions ready to be made!

Now its on to the fun part – the sewing!  I’ll show you once they are all done. :)

Who wants to shop?

Shameless self promotion today.  I am a bit tired of looking at some of my older stock, so I am having a little sale over the next couple of days via my Facebook Page.

The sale will kick off at 8pm tonight my time – Australian Eastern Standard Summer Time.  All you have to do is check out the photo album called Sale Time – 16th – 18th March 2012.  I’ll have all the details there by 8pm on how to purchase your pick :)

Here’s a peak of some that will be available.

Hope you can spare a minute over the weekend to have a peak :) Thanks folks :)

A challenge met

I am a member of the EtsyNEAT team – Etsy Needle Arts Team – and the team has a challenge over 2 months to create something in line with the chosen theme.  This time around the challenge theme was “Natural History”.  A very broad topic!

Etsy itself describes this theme as “Woodland forest themes and animals, namely birds, owls, squirrels, hedgehogs, chipmunks, bunnies, butterflies, feathers, nests, eggs, acorns, leaves, trees, branches, woodgrain, and natural colors”

Here is my entry

Owl, rabbit, mushroom mini pincushions

I have been very impressed with the other entries, as shown here.  Its going to be tough to choose a favourite!
